The Little Coat: The Bob and Sue Elliott Story

by Alan J. Buick

Awarded Honourable Mention, Biography
2010 Hollywood Book Festival
recognizing books worthy of more attention in the film and movie industry

This fascinating book chronicles the true story of a Canadian soldier from Alberta, a little Dutch girl who escaped the Nazis and the special coat that drew them together. Bob Elliott was only 15 when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in Calgary. He fought at battles including Juno Beach, Walcheren Island and the Battle of the Scheldt. Little Sussie Cretier had once defied a German officer to save her father's life. Nothing could keep her from getting close to these brave men who had saved her family and her country.

Saskatchewan author Alan J. Buick, a Legion member in Pense, Saskatchewan, has been unravelling the story of The Little Coat for several years, since he first noticed the little coat hanging in the Royal Canadian Legion in Olds, Alberta. Buick’s interest in this aged garment and its significance to Canadian history encouraged Bob and Sue Elliott, both members of the Olds Legion, to donate the coat to the Canadian War Museum. Buick began writing The Little Coat to educate Canadians and people around the world about the horrific events, accomplishments, heroes and everyday characters of the Second World War.

PRAIRIE PILOT: LADY LUCK WAS ON MY SIDE

THE STORIES OF WALTER D. WILLIAMS

Compiled and Edited by Deana J. Driver

Prairie Pilot contains 100 short stories written by the late Walter Williams, a ‘character’ and former resident of Kerrobert, SK. Walter owned an International Harvester dealership, loved to fly his small Aeronca Chief airplane and loved to help people. Prairie Pilot chronicles some of Walter Williams’ more hair-raising, humourous and helpful experiences from 1946 to 1963 when he acted as a flying taxi service for numerous patients, teachers, physicians, police officers, criminals, friends and thrill-seekers across west central Saskatchewan and into Alberta and Manitoba.

"As a pilot, I enjoyed the stories, but I constantly shook my head in disbelief
at the foolish antics Williams undertook in the interests of helping people.

He died of a heart attack at age 68. He is lucky he did not die earlier

                                     in a plane crash."

THE JOURNEY OF PARALYMPIAN COLETTE BOURGONJE

By Mary Harelkin Bishop

In June 1980, with her high school graduation just around the corner, Colette Bourgonje was a small-town girl with big dreams. She had already recorded great successes in track and field, basketball, volleyball and badminton and was on the road to becoming a world-class athlete. Then a car accident changed her life – forever.
Colette did not let her new circumstances as a paraplegic stand in her way. She became the first disabled student to graduate from the College of Physical Education at the University of Saskatchewan and she competed in her first Paralympic Games at age 30. Now, 18 years later, she has became one of Canada's most successful disabled athletes. As a teacher and world-class athlete, Colette Bourgonje is a role model and an inspiration. Her most recent challenge was the 2010 Paralympic Games. She made Canadian history by winning the first medal by a Canadian Paralympian on Canadian soil, and received the final medal of the Games, a special gold medal awarded to the female athlete who most embodies the spirit of the Games.

Just a Bunch of Farmers: The Story of Weyburn Inland Terminal  1976-2001
  by Deana Driver

Just a Bunch of Farmers is a story of entrepreneurship and perseverance. Tired of politicians and bureaucrats determining their fate, a group of southeastern Saskatchewan farmers took matters into their own hands in 1975 and, despite opposition and some near disasters, built a unique innovative grain-handling facility to improve their own future. The book outlines some of the turmoil surrounding the Weyburn Inland Terminal (W.I.T.) over its first 25 years, including a construction lien, contract disputes and a major split in the founding fathers in 1998.

Weyburn Inland Terminal Ltd. was the first inland grain terminal in Canada to be completely owned and operated by farmers. It amassed an impressive list of 14 ‘firsts’ in its first quarter century, including being the first in Canada to do protein testing, cleaning and drying of grain on the Prairies as well as the first in Canada to build grain condominiums to use as farmer-owned storage units. WIT was the first to pay farmers for the refuse in their grain and the first to win the Canadian Wheat Board ‘Quality First’ award for excellence in grain-handling.
