Teacher Workbook

Created by Tracy Jones (Bourne)
Additions and editing by Deana Driver

Chapter Three:
Running for His Life - Exploring Language

1. When Ted was expelled from school for his outspoken behaviour, what did the other students do? How do you think he felt about their actions? Do you think he would have done the same thing as they did if one of them had been expelled? Why or why not?
2. The principal allowed Ted to come back to classes but two conditions were imposed. What were they?
3. Travel back in time in your mind and choose to be either (a) the principal of Ted’s high school; (b) a student going to the high school with Ted; or b) a journalist from North American who is watching the events unfold at the time leading up to Ted being expelled. Write two entries into your imaginary diary about what you saw, thought and felt for two days in a row in Ethiopia during this time. (Use a separate sheet of paper.)
4. Choose an issue which you could feel passionate enough about to considering marking in a protest. Explain your views and why you think changes should be made....

Chapter Three:
Running for His Life - World View

1. Who was the last emperor of Ethiopia? What were two improvements he brought to Ethiopia?
2. Research the flag of Ethiopia. Compare it to the flag of your country, including when each flag was created and what it symbolizes. (Use a separate sheet of paper.)
3. Why did Ethiopia ’s economic conditions worsen after 1968? Why did the university students begin to protest?
4. What changes in land ownership did the Ethiopian people want?
5. What did teachers, educated workers and members of the country’s military want?
6. There were three burning issues for Ted. What were they?
7. Why were Ted’s parents so concerned that Ted was so vocal?....
