Her first book, Just a Bunch of Farmers: The Story of Weyburn Inland
Terminal 1976-2001, was released in November 2001. She wrote the
book based on research and interviews with about 30 shareholders involved
in building the groundbreaking grain-handling terminal in southern
Saskatchewan. Deana created the design and layout of the book and also organized
sales and marketing for Just a Bunch of Farmers.
In 2004, Deana edited and
designed the layout of the
novel Return to Willows written by Saskatoon author Howard
H. Birnie. The Canadian Church Press awarded
First Place in Service Journalism to the September 2004 United
Church Observer article "How To Give Your
Congregation That Happy Glow," of which Deana was a
contributing writer. In 2005, she helped edit Classic Saskatchewan
(Second Edition), a
tourism-oriented book celebrating the province's people and history, and
contributed two articles to The Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan.
The second book that Deana wrote is the award-winning, best-selling motivational biography Never
Give Up: Ted Jaleta's Inspiring Story, which was released in October 2006. It is the true story of the courage, determination and hope-filled life and
lessons of African-born elite runner and Canadian role model Ted Jaleta.
The book received an Honourable Mention in the Biography/Autobiography
category at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival. Never Give Up was also a Finalist
in the Reader's Choice and in the Publishing in Education categories of the 2007
Saskatchewan Book Awards. Alberta Education has endorsed Never Give
Up for use in Grade 10 to 12 Social Studies classes.
The Teacher
Workbook to accompany Never Give Up, with additions and
editing by Deana Driver, is now available online for English and Social Studies classes.
In September 2008, Deana edited and published three new books: My Zayde and
Other Memories of Growing Up Jewish by
author Ricki Segal about her
quirky family and wonderful culture; Seeds of Hope: A Prairie Story by best-selling author Mary Harelkin Bishop about
a little boy growing up
and wanting to stay on a
Prairie
farm during hard times; and Prairie Pilot: Lady Luck Was On My Side, a collection of
100
stories written by the late Walter Williams. Deana compiled and
edited Prairie Pilot, which
focuses on Walter's sometimes-harrowing trips as an airplane pilot in the 1950s to
transport pregnant women, hospital patients and prisoners in storm-stayed rural Saskatchewan. Prairie Pilot is
the first independent publishing project of
DriverWorks
Ink. Seeds of Hope has been awarded Finalist,
Children's Literature at the 2009 Saskatchewan Book Awards;
Honourable Mention, Teen/Young Adult at the 2009 Nashville
Book Festival; and Honourable Mention, Teenage at the 2008 London
(England) Book Festival.
In November 2009, DriverWorks Ink
published The Little Coat: The Bob
and Sue Elliott Story by Alan J. Buick. The Little Coat is about a Canadian soldier
in the Second World War, a little Dutch girl who escaped from the Nazis,
and the coat that drew them together. The Little Coat: The Bob and
Sue Elliott Story was awarded an Honourable
Mention in the Biography/Autobiography category
of the 2010 Hollywood Book Festival. The festival’s annual
competition honours books “worthy of greater attention from the film, TV
and multimedia industries.” This is the same award given to
Never Give Up, written and co-published by Deana Driver, in the same
category in 2007.
